The Apprenticeship Levy is a new government training levy that will come into effect in May 2017. All employers with an annual wage bill of over £3m will be required to pay a 0.5% tax which they can spend on training new apprentices or existing staff.

Key facts about the Apprenticeship Levy

The Apprenticeship Levy comes into effect in May 2017.

Employers with a wage bill of over £3m will have to pay a 0.5% tax.

The government will top up employer’s Levy funds by 10%

Levy funds can be used to hire new apprentices or train existing staff.

The government will give employers a £15,000 allowance, which will be deducted from the amount they have to pay.

Levy payments will be collected monthly by HMRC and deposited into a new online account called the ‘Digital Apprenticeship Service’

Employers have 24 months to spend their Levy money before it is reallocated.
